How does one evaluate this technology ?
The best method to evaluate this technology is to witness a live demonstration of dictation of your specific practice records. Ask
those demonstrating a system to use your patient notes or letters to referring physicians - something they have never seen before. In the software industry, competing firms often face each other in what
is commonly referred to as a 'shoot-out' - a competitive test in which a controlled input is used to determine which software will give a more accurate, faster or better result. The following competitive tests
could reveal the better offering of ASR systems to a physician practice:
1.
- Have the same 400 word text document be dictated into the system by each company's demo representative. The dictation time is recorded and the number of word mis-recogntions are counted. This data is taken for dictation speeds of 80, 100 and 120 words per minute. This approach relies on the medical term knowledge and pronunciation skill of the dictator for each company and the test does not eliminate this variable.
2.
- If tape recorder dictation is being considered, it may be possible to utilize a common tape to be 'played' into each competing system to eliminate the above variable. Each system would have to be 'compatible' with the tape player being used. Again the same statistics would be gathered.

- You dictate into each system without any prior enrollment, practicing or use. This tests the quality of the specialized vocabulary and the adaptability of the system. This will only work for users without accents and requires some coaching for you to learn the required dictation style prior to dictating.
During recent medical shows and demonstrations, we have permitted physicians, with practically no training to dictate directly into the PC that has the appropriate medical vocabulary. The recognition
accuracy was very high - well over 95% for the 3 minutes of user use.
